I am a member of a lot of mommy groups and a question I am frequently asked to address is whether or not chiropractic care is safe for children. I respond with my personal experience with my own daughter. She was born in a planned home birth in May 2015 and was checked for subluxation, interference in the nervous system, moments after I got her in my arms. It is not only safe for children to get chiropractic care, it is necessary for proper development.

I would like to tell more of my daughter’s story. We found out on her eighth day of life that she had undiagnosed hypoplastic left heart syndrome or HLHS. This means that the left side of her heart is severely underdeveloped and incapable of pushing blood out to her body. The ductus arteriosus, a structure that is a normal part of the fetal heart, is a small opening between the vessels that carry oxygenated blood and those that carry deoxygenated blood and is the only way my daughter’s body was getting oxygen. When this structure is still open after birth it is called the patent ductus arteriosus, PDA, these 3 letters are very well known by parents of HLHS children. The PDA is supposed to close on the second to third day of life and hers did not start to close until day 8. I truly attribute this to her being checked for subluxation after birth to make sure that there was no interference in her nervous system. Your body knows what it needs, it just needs to have no interference in the pathways from the brain to the body. Her body knew that her PDA being open was the only thing keeping her alive and that is why we still have her today. She is now 2 years and 6 months old and heart defect aside has had no issues. Not only is chiropractic care safe for children, I highly encourage it.
